Sober Coaching – a new service at Ocean Hills

Ocean Hills is thrilled to announce a new sober coaching service to complement our residential rehab services.

Sober coaching is separate to the Ocean Hills inhouse therapy programme and is designed to complement it. Coaching offers an extra service for those who might not be ready for rehab, or people who want to give their existing sobriety a powerful boost to stay on track.

What is the sober coaching service at Ocean Hills?

Sober coaching is a great way to get started on a sober journey, or strengthen your existing sobriety. It's also a great way to get back on track if you're struggling, says Paulette Crowley, Ocean Hills' new sober coach.

"Coaching provides intense 1-on-1 support, helping people reach their sober goals by building positive healthy habits and skills. I am in my client's corner – working with them as a team to identify issues, then develop plans and goals to create positive change."

She says it's important to realise that coaching is not the same as rehab, or counselling.

"Health coaching is about getting results with serious examination of behaviours and challenges that stand in your way, and creating action plans for lasting change.

Making lasting changes in hard and many people find it difficult to keep going without encouragement and accountability. If you're answerable to yourself and a coach, you're much more likely to build habits that stick.

"If you've tried everything to shift bad habits and overcome health struggles, and think you'll never get the change you want and need, coaching is a great option."

Accountability is a crucial part of the sober coaching process.

"This is not about wishing away your problems – it's about taking positive action. Making lasting changes in hard and many people find it difficult to keep going without encouragement and accountability. If you're answerable to yourself and a coach, you're much more likely to build habits that stick."

How does sober coaching happen?

Most coaching takes place over Zoom, which provides convenience and privacy. "My clients like having the option of jumping on a Zoom call with me when the time suits them, and in a place that suits them."

Sessions are usually weekly, and we recommend a minimum of booking four to start with.

"That is usually enough time to work together to identify problems, set goals and make plans. After the first four coaching sessions, some people find booking in for regular monthly sessions is a great way to keep themselves on track."

Paulette uses the positive psychology method of acceptance and commitment therapy in her coaching practice, alongside other traditional coaching methods. But the main driver in every session is always the person being coached.

"Coaching is about working on the client's agenda."

Qualified mental health coach who lives sober

Paulette is a qualified mental health coach who specialises in sober coaching but also has lived experience of addiction and sobriety.

"I finally got sober 9 years ago after struggling with alcohol all of my life," she says. "I was a chronic relapser and tried for decades to get and stay sober. No one thought I'd ever manage to make it stick and I didn't believe in myself either. I had run out of hope."

After hitting yet another rock bottom in 2015, she gave sobriety one last shot. "I had to take it really seriously and put all of my effort into staying sober. I was really grateful for a lot of professional help – I needed it. I was really unwell."

Paulette has helped a lot of people with their sobriety journey since then, which prompted her training as a mental health coach.

"I loved being part of other people's sobriety journey so much that I wanted to make it my job."

Her long-time career as an award-winning health journalist has also helped her in her coaching.

"Being aware of the latest research and science breakthroughs in health helps me being the best information to coaching when it's needed. If you want to get and stay sober, you need to be the healthiest you can be."
